A Laughing Matter

The Joint Senior School production – A Laughing Matter by April De Angelis.

It’s 1773 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. The crowd is getting restless. The leading man’s unconscious but the show must go on.

Set in the theatres and coffee shops of eighteenth century Georgian London, this rich comedy of manners presents an irreverent version of real-life events, by telling the story of David Garrick, Dr Johnson, Oliver Goldsmith and a new play called She Stoops to Conquer. At a time where Garrick was transforming the acting profession and caught between financial pressures and artistic ambition, he must decide if he can risk staging a play that could make or break his career. With a cast of senior students from both Warwick School and King’s High School this modern comedy set in the eighteenth century evokes the wit and farce of BBCs ‘Upstart Crow’ and ‘Black Adder’, and promises to be a fast-paced and hugely enjoyable production.
