Warwick Hall
Join The Swan’s for an evening of English mystery and intrigue, along with Baritone Roderick Williams OBE, described as “our greatest living baritone” by the Daily Telegraph and conductor Jason Lai.
Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations was conceived in the era of Arthur Conan Doyle’s celebrated detective when mysteries, codes, and puzzles seemed to be built into the fabric of English society, from its impenetrable class system to the byzantine hierarchies of church and state.
The barriers to social mobility were keenly felt by Elgar, who appeared, on the surface, to be the archetypal Edwardian gentleman but was inwardly plagued by self-doubt and a class-induced inferiority complex.
The evening’s repertoire includes Vaughan Williams, Walton, Warlock and a new piece by Roderick Williams titled Corona.
Roderick Williams Corona
Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs
Walton Two pieces from Henry V
Elgar arr. George Morton Enigma Variations, Op.36
Warlock Capriol Suite
