Perceptions Dance Theatre presents The Zoo at Kathmandu

Bridge House Theatre

The Zoo at Kathmandu by Perceptions Dance Theatre

Directed & Choreographed by Tonia Payne-Cheney

Step into a magical world where animals dance, dreams come alive, and everyone is welcome. Perceptions Dance Theatre is proud to present its latest family production, The Zoo at Kathmandu, a joyful and inclusive dance-theatre experience based on the beloved books by Tony Larcombe. At the heart of this enchanting story is Enola Clare, a courageous polar bear, whose adventures through a very special zoo in Kathmandu captivate audiences young and old. As animals come to life through dynamic movement, colour, and sound, the stage transforms into a wondrous landscape of imagination, challenge, and belonging.

Under the visionary direction and choreography of Tonia Payne-Cheney, this performance features exceptional dancers, including disabled performers, whose artistry redefines expectations and celebrates diverse bodies in motion. Blending contemporary dance and  ballet with striking visuals, the production promises a captivating experience that speaks to both the heart and the senses.

Tonia has also opened the doors wider by working closely with the theatre to ensure access and inclusion at every level — from how tickets are sold, to how audiences are seated and supported, including support for deaf members of the audience.

In a beautiful expression of outreach and representation, the production features young disabled dancers from the local community, sharing the stage and showing just what’s possible when barriers are removed and creativity is given room to soar. Perceptions Dance Theatre, a company proudly led by disabled artists and creatives, is committed to creating work that not only entertains but sparks change — challenging preconceptions and expanding the future of dance and performers access to theatres.

With vibrant settings, expressive choreography, and a message of inclusion and wonder, Enola Clare and the Zoo at Kathmandu invites families of all kinds to experience something truly magical.
